I wanted to do something new and fun. I'm a musician and dig any and every kind of music. So, I thought of doing an armature album/artist review. It will not always be new artists or new music....it's just music I really dig. If you want an artists featured, let me know, I'll check out their music and write a post. :-)
I will do a brief history of the artist, music, and albums and then write my thoughts on the artist.
So this, week is Sara Bareilles
From the mouth of Sara herself:
"I've been writing songs for as long as I can remember. Some of them make me happy and some of them are sh*t, but all of them come because I can't imagine what else to do with my head and the things that are in it besides write songs.
Songs, and some pretty bad poetry.
But mostly just songs. "
Growing up in the far north, redwood stacked Eureka, California; Sara developed a keen imagination and love for music. She sung in school choirs, did musical theater and even played a little softball. She soon left her small town and entered the big bad LA scene at UCLA. She studied communications, but have more fun diving into open-mic nights and small shows.
And that's all history now.
Her new and Freshman album "Little Voice" is anything but little. It's full of rich, vocals and strong piano moments.
Her voice will begin soft and strong, even with a little smokey-whinny blues accent. And then BAM!!! She hits this unbelievably clear, strong, goose bumpy note.
I would almost say she's a mixture of Colbie Calliate and Maroon Five meets blues and mixed to create this beautiful art work!
She her writing shows so much emotion!
The Tongue and Cheek "Love Song" tells her man that she's not going to do something she doesn't want to just to make him stay.
"Vegas" is my favorite song on here she has a jazzy piano in the background like she's talking to a friend to convince her not to do something stupid...."It's never your fault you can't start your own winning streak. But I'd hate to lose you to the fortune you seek."
Other songs like "Come Round Soon", and "Morningside" scream of love gone wrong and wishing things had ended better, wishing they hadn't ended, but glad they did end. These are a beautifully weaved tapestry of contradictions. You can hear in her voice, the thoughts running through her mind. She left her soul there for all to see. And to show the world, it's okay to love and get heartbroken. Move on, it's better!!
"Love on the Rocks" speaks of how love is like Alcohol, "Hot as hell, cold as ice, sip it slow cause it's so nice. Dulls my sense drives my pain but I do it again. burns a bit to the touch, dangerous if it's too much."
The last song I wanted to talk about was "Fairytale". I started listening thinking it was going to be something cute, and, well fairtalish....I could be father from the truth. It's humor goes through all the well known princesses (Sleeping beauty, Cinderella, snow white, etc) and talks about how they didn't live "Happily Ever After". That they are tired of the prince not coming home or the humorous line of "doing the dishes again, cause what else can you do with 7 itty-bitty men?" That they're looking for the next best thing.
Bottom line? Good album to buy! There some funky-blue-type stuff going on, some sweet vocals...different, but in a good way!!
so, did you like?
