Ceres Man Dies In Beach Rescue Effort

Girl Falls Into Surf Near Carmel

A Ceres man died while trying to rescue a girl swept away by waves near Carmel on Sunday, authorities said.

 

Police said that just after 3 p.m. a girl was washed into the surf at Monastery Beach.

 

Several people jumped in to save her, but two of them got into trouble as well and had to be rescued.

 

The Monterey County coroner said Mark Darrough, 47, died following the rescue effort.

 

The conditions of the girl and the other person involved in the rescue were not immediately known.
