Well, things went from bad to worse. Stella still wasn’t feeling well when she got up this morning. She was still running a pretty high fever (103) and she had a rash on her chest and stomach. I knew we had to get her to the doctor. I called around 11:00am and got a 12:45pm appointment for her. I went and got ready and left her to play with daddy. A little after noon, I came out and saw her intently looking at her new ball. I know she likes that ball, but something about the way she was staring at it just wasn’t right. She was just staring at it and not saying a word. She was on her stomach and she slowly lowered her head to the floor. I asked her what she was doing and she didn’t respond. I called her name several times and got no response. I rubbed her back and still got nothing. Bil picked her up and she was stiff. She didn’t respond to being picked up and her jaw was clenched. We knew we had to get her to the hospital rather than the doctor. We were going to drive her ourselves, but I decided it would be better to call 911 instead. It would have taken us at least 20 minutes to get to the closest hospital. As soon as I made the call, she started to come around a little. She still wasn’t talking, but she was looking around. She was burning up, but she had started to shiver. The ambulance was here in less than five minutes. They took the two of us to Henry Ford while Bil followed in the truck. She didn’t say anything while we were in the ambulance, but she seemed a little more coherent.

Once we got to the hospital, she was doing much better. She was running a fever of 104.1 after taking Tylenol, so we don’t know what it was at its highest. They determined that she had had a febrile seizure brought on by the fever. It was just a focal seizure. Thankfully she never actually convulsed. They gave her a full work up - they tested her blood and urine, swabbed her throat because it looked a little red, and did a chest x-ray. The blood and urine looked good. The x-ray was clear. The strep test came back negative, but those are only 80% accurate, so they still didn’t want to rule that out. They were pretty sure that the red throat and rash were strep related. They gave her IV fluids and antibiotics. They were amazed at how strong this little two year old was. It took four adults to hold her down while placing the IV, and she was still overpowering us. She is one tough cookie! We spent just over six hours in the ER. They sent us home with orders to alternate Motrin and Tylenol and a prescription for an antibiotic. We will follow up the her pediatrician either Tuesday or Wednesday.

We managed to make it just over two years without even a cold. When she does finally get sick, she goes all out and makes it big! She really gave us quite a scare. Now that she’s had a febrile seizure, she will be at risk every time she runs a fever. Thankfully they grow out of them around age three or four. That’s something I never need to see again.

For those of you who asked, we were able to save all of our food after the outage. Stella and the food have managed to make it through this whole ordeal relatively unscathed. Now hopefully we can get back to some semblance of normalcy and leave this horrible weekend behind us.

Mar. 25, 2008 at 1:53 AM I am so sorry to hear about your daughter being sick. I have a 18 month old and a mother should never have to see their child in so much pain that they can't tell you what wrong. I am so happy you were able to get her to the hospital in time. Sometimes as parents we never know when we are being overprotective when our children are sick. I hope that she is feels better real soon, and she will be playing with her toys before you know it.
