Mar. 16, 2007 at 6:27 PM I don't think he will miss it.  My son used on for the first six months of his life.  When I took it away he only had 2 teeth I think, the bottom ones.  The only reason that I let my son use one is because they had already given him one at the hospital and in that short time it had become his bestfriend.  So I let him use it for a while, but at six months I took it away and it was like he never missed it.  I know all kids arent this way but the younger the better I think.  Good luck!

Mar. 16, 2007 at 6:27 PM i'm on my third child and no pacifiers here... never really needed them.. when the older children got to the teething stage I had those toys/teething rings that you can freeze for the "chewing" and soothing. Hope that helps.

My son took a paci adn was bottlefed. My first dd would never take a paci.  She was breastfed, and actually quite often used me as a paci.  My daughter now takes a paci for naps and at bedtime, and it's made life a LOT easier on me as far as getting her to sleep (she nurses only as well, neither daughter would ever take a bottle.)  I'm sure that there are things that I could do differently so that I wouldn't have had problems with my first, but if I had another I would encourage the paci again.  It's just personal preference.  I don't see a problem at all with them, and now that it's been linked to lessen the chances of SIDS when used at night, I'm totally for it.    I believe that they'll have a lifetime to learn to self sooth, so while they are babies I'll allow anything for them to be happy.

But if you've gone this far, it's possible that he won't take one anyways, so it's not a big deal.  And I don't think that it really helps with teething at all, so that's not a concern really.  If things are going ok for you now, you might as well just stick with it. :)

Mar. 16, 2007 at 6:31 PM my girls were in the hosptial for three weeks after they were born. they loved pacies while in the hospital but once we took them home no pacie no more. not because i didn't want them to they just didn't want them anymore. if he starts teething there are toys that are made for that. my girls didn't use those much, but i guess it all depends on the child. you may feel bad to hear him cry but he will learn to self soothe it just takes time. good luck

Mar. 16, 2007 at 6:34 PM I nursed my son, but he never took a binky either.  He is 18 months old now and no worse for the wear!  When he started teething, he chewed on everything, but I didn't feel like he needed a binky.  Your little guy will

Mar. 16, 2007 at 6:37 PM We chose to give our oldest a pacifier, biggest mistake EVER! When #2 came along we agreed we were not going to do the same. The problem was I breastfed both. With #1 it was easy giving the paci between feedings, #2 I found myself feeding alot more. Teething was also easier with our paci baby. But truth be told, breaking the habit was a huge nightmare. My baby completely changed when we took his paci and it was hard on us as well.

He reminded me of an alcoholic, just the sight of a paci and he would break down crying. I'm not talking about a tantrum, I mean truly heartfelt crying. He needed that stupid thing and it was almost like weening him off of drugs. I know he was an extreme case of paci baby, but we did not want to take the chance with baby #2 going through the same thing.

As far as teething goes we had a coupl tools to get us through.

#1 - Of course meds (orajel, teething tablets, tylenol, etc...)

#2 - This was my and babies fav... I bought fresh washcloths from walmart and dampened them with water or apple juice, anything clear so as not to stain clothing, and placed them in a plastic baggy and put them in the freezer. In about an hour or two you have a nice numbing, safe, natural remedy for teething.

Hope these helped.

Mar. 16, 2007 at 10:03 PM no pacifier used here at all, and both of my kids did fine with teething. there are always teething rings, or my kids' favorite, a wet washcloth stuck in the freezer for a while to chew on ;)

Mar. 16, 2007 at 10:07 PM Just some info, I read a report last week in a journal that said that pacifiers are not likely to cause problems with babies teeth and that new studies have shown that they may reduce the incidence of infant death due to SIDS. I think it siad the it is because the baby is less likely to stop breathing if they have a pacifier in their mouth while they sleep. Hope this is helpful.
