HI! I just wanted to comment on 'birthmothers day". Many of us consider the creation and celebration of this "holiday" to indicate that we are NOT mothers and are not worthy of being honoured on Mothers Day. Instead, the adoptive mothers of our children are honoured on Mother's Day and we are instead relegated to a day that thanks us for having produced more "product" for the adoption market, for being nothing more than incubators, "birthers," and "life givers" as we have been so called -- but not mothers.
Do you know that the term "birthmother" was coined and promoted by social workers to indicate that our motherhood ended at the birth of our child? :( My eldest son, standing behind me right now and hugging me, profoundly disagrees with this. I have always been his mother, even while we were separated for 20 long years. He even calls me "Mom". My motherhood did not end, and i do not feel that yours ended either.
Tracy, I feel that you and i and the rest of us who lost children to adoption (surrendered, placed, whatever) should be remembered and honoured on Mothers Day, not on some holiday promoted by adoption agencies as a way to make the mothers they exploited feel good about having "given so much" to an infertile couple.
Well I am glad u are back with your child. That is so cool he calls you Mom my Birthson is turning 18 this Mothers.I run a group and have for the past 5 yrs called Birthmothers Of NH And we do Birthmothers day in my town. Here my site www.birthmothersofnh.com
