For my three teens, grounding happens most often when they are flat out defiant of rules ie: disregarding curfew, or when chores aren't done (when the chores are finally done, three days later, they are free to go out again. You would think it wouldn't take long to get over that one but,,,,,,:) My youngest loses privileges for disobeying or refusing to follow instructions. Most commonly, he will lose video privileges because he gets really angry about limits that are set for how long he can watch or play. But taking away privileges is certainly an evolutionary process, changing as they age. I won't be sorry to see these days go, and they will be able to "ground" themselves, voluntarily choosing to make the right decision, so I don't have to force them to stop and think.
