hubby and i were getting ready for church on wednsday when his friend called and asked DH to bring a game back. on the way to church DH says he should ask for his clippers back from his friend and i said 'no that wouldn't be right. the bible says to give and not ask for it back'. DH said 'what?!'
years ago i found a verse that kinda startled me. my whole life i was taught that when you borrow something be sure to take it back and when you lend be sure and get it back. but this verse said otherwise:
Luke 6:30- 'Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.'
that can be very difficult especially if your loaning one of your favorite things. so what is the point of this particular verse? why not ask for it back? it is yours after all. after reading the preceeding verses it occured to me that Jesus doesn't want material things to be important.
we should be willing to be a blessing no matter if what we are lending has some kind of sentamental value or something that was purchased on a wimb. the begining of the verse say to give to everyone who asks. it doesn't say 'give to everyone who asks as long as you don't mind not getting it back.', it just says to give.
i loaned like almost my entire dvd collection to a friend because she was 8 months pregnant and a housewife with no ride when her DH was at work and no cable. i never have got them back and she moved to arkansas almost a year ago. it kind of perturbed me cause i enjoyed a great deal of those movies and i did ask for them back once but i felt horrible about it. mainly cause i had an attitude at the time.
when we have the mentality of 'if you give it back great, if not that's ok', we are more likely to not be focusing on how our things are being treated in their care and more on loving them and being a blessing

you are so right, we were in a position once to "loan" some money to a friend. They knew it was a loan but we never asked where it was becasue of the Bible. If they had offered, we would have taken it. We have done that once or twice and I can tell you that we have recieved many blessings . I will give until I have nothing left to give becasue after all it is just a thing right. And if someone asks for it they must need it more than me.
