I bought my first energy saving lightbulb

today! My 11 year old son told me about them last year, he said it would save me money. I don't recall how he had heard about these bulbs.
The bulb package claims the bulb should last five years! Oh really? We shall see.
This 13 watt bulb is equal to a regular bulb of 60 watts, interesting. ![]()
So it says I should be saving about $38.00 a year! Sounds good to me! Has anyone else ever tried these bulbs?
So, I went to use the bulb, put it in the socket, gave it a few seconds and nothing... went to try it in another lamp, no light! Aaahhhh so is this how I save money? LOL Guess it isn't going to make it to the five year mark, either! LOL

Oh, the link doesn't look like a link. Just click on the part "Consumers in dark..." :-)
Glad you were able to return it. I don't know how safe I'd feel with the little ones and all, just in case one broke!
I am so glad I returned it. The cashier was odd about it at first, she wanted to look in the store flyer to see if there was a rebate for it first. I was puzzled, I had just bought it the day before. Hmmm.... I suppose she thinks maybe people buy items, run home to type in the rebate on the net, then return the stuff or what? Anyhow I did get my money back.
I also did look at the above article you mentioned. Wow, what a mess! A small mercury spill is thousands to clean up... whoa...........these bulbs seem too expensive all the way around, don't they?

Just be VERY careful not to break them! They contain MERCURY. There was a story last year about a woman who had one break when she was trying to install a light fixture, and she ended up having to get the Haz Mat crew to her house, with parts of her house sealed off (!!) until they removed all the particles and tested to make sure the toxicity level was safe.

Consumers in dark over risk of new light bulbs - push for energy-saving fluorescents ignores mercury disposal hazards
I've become a total cynic -- whenever any major corporation pushes for something "energy-saving" I get suspicious...
