My name is Lynette A. Odell.  I am the owner/operator of All County Interpreting Services for the Deaf, Ltd.  We are in our 10^th year of servicing the Deaf Community on Long Island, and in the New York area.  I've been signing for 21 years, interpreting for nearly 15 years, and coordinating services through my agency for 10 years now.  I am also mother to my amazing 18 month old daughter, Ryleigh Maybelle, who is hearing.  Ryleigh has been learning American Sign Language (ASL) since birth.  She has a signing vocabulary of over 80 signs, and a spoken vocabulary of over 200 words.

 

I always knew I would teach my child ASL.  Not only is it my chosen career, but it is something I am also very passionate about.  Recent studies have also shown many reasons to include ASL in the lives of our hearing children.  Here are just some of the benefits that can be achieved by teaching ASL to hearing infants and children:

 

1.  Reduces frustration by allowing preverbal infants to communicate sooner

2.  Helps signing infants to talk sooner – it does not delay speech!

3.  Reinforces verbal language by adding visual emphasis to auditory input

4.  Increases interest in books/reading

5.  Children who sign tend to have a larger vocabulary

6.  Increases parent-child bonding

7.  Enhances self-esteem

8.  Improves emotional development

9.  Builds greater brain function

 

Studies show that children who sign have an IQ that is as much as 10-12 points higher than children who don't sign!  It is also a great introduction to a second language.

 

I have seen the benefits first-hand with my daughter, Ryleigh.  We are constantly approached by other interested parents every where we go.  We are proud, and excited, to share our story and ASL experience with everyone we meet.  ASL has become part of our daily routine – along with Daddy, Nannie, Poppy, Cousin Olivia (who is 21 months old - and signing, too), and Aunt Missy and Uncle Mark.  ASL, and its benefits, are something to be enjoyed and cherished by our entire family, and now your family, too!

 

At SIGN 4 FUN we offer many different types of programs to suit your needs.  The curriculum for all of our programs is based on American Sign Language.  Our main focus is our Mommy/Daddy and Me Sign Language program for parents and children.  These 45 minute long classes meet weekly, for 8 weeks.  One adult must accompany the child to class.  Other caregivers are encouraged to attend as well.  Each class consists of introduction of each parent/child (in ASL!), review of previous class, instruction on new signs, practice, and songs or stories incorporating those signs.  The age groups for the Mommy/Daddy and Me program are:

 

0-9 months

9-12 months

12-18 months

18-24 months

24-36 months

3 years-5 years

 

In addition to the Mommy/Daddy and Me program, we offer a 2 hour intensive ASL Quick-start Class for adults. This class is a pre-requisite for the Mommy/Daddy and Me program.  This is a one-time meeting that will prepare you for the Mommy/Daddy and Me program by answering questions about what ASL is, how and why to use ASL with hearing children, skills for everyday application, and instruction on 50+ signs, as well as the manual alphabet.

 

If you have at least 5 other families available, you can host your own SIGN 4 FUN home party.  You choose either the ASL Quick-start for adults, or a Mommy/Daddy and Me Sign Language party.  The Mommy/Daddy and Me home party can be tailored to suit all age groups combined. 

 

We can also provide your business with the ASL Quick-start, or a program to suit your particular businesses needs.  This is a great idea for any business whose main focus is children, and for educators, as well.

$25.00 each add'l adult family member (i.e. grandparents, etc.)

Hi Lynette,

I live in the city of Orange in Orange County California.  I am also passionate about ASL. My son is 20 months and knows over 80 signs and about 50 spoken words. I am a stay home mom that is looking for employment in the ASL industry on any scale. Are you able to make any recommendations in my area. My hearts desire is to keep my 20 month old with me while I work. Any ideas? Thank you in advance fellow signing mommy.
