The first time I heard the word Autism, was in the doctors office when my little man had just turned three. I had no idea what it was other than my limited knowledge of the movie rainman. I mean we always new he was a little different. But Autism....? I can remember thinking, "ok now what the hell are we supposed to do". I was honestly scared to death. See, when alot of us parents are told our child has Autism we are sent on our merry way. Its like "well, his weight is good, his ears look great, he's getting to be a big boy... Oh, and by the way, he has autism, here is a pamphlet, have a great day." I can tell ya, its just a little bit overwhelming. Between, the numerous doctors, therapist, interventions, schools, diet changes, stares and comments from strangers, lack of sleep....... there are times when you question the almighty's plan. But in the midst of all that you start to learn something so awesome, its hard to imagine.... You learn about patience. You learn about tolerance. You learn about strength. You learn about the real meaning of marriage and commitment. You learn about perseverance. You learn about courage. You learn alot about faith. You learn about kindness. You learn about simplicity. But the most important, most awesome thing you learn, is about true, unbelievable, earth shattering LOVE. I can honestly say I have never in my life loved or been love like I am with my son. There isn't a single day that goes by that he doesn't teach me something. I know, especially this month, with it being Autism awareness, some feel bombarded with information. We here about the struggles, the hardship, the financial burdens. But what we don't here enough about IMO, is what an amazing world it is when you live with a child that has Autism. When was the last time you slowed down? When was the last time you actually looked at the sun or the clouds? When was the last time you sat at the window and watched thebirds come eat out of the bird house you made? When was the last time you played in rain and stomped in mud puddles? When was the last time you actually spent thirty minutes watching the Caterpillar crawl across the driveway? When was the last time you flew a kite? When was the last time you laughed just to laugh? When was the last time you were told you were loved "best in the world". You see my dh and I now live this every day. There is no world like my son's world. There is no time in his world. And as awful as Autism can sometimes be....... I'm thankful I have learned about this new world.

Wonderful post, Melissa. And it is so true. For all the hardships that have come with Nathan's autism, there have been just as many gifts...
