Racism on cafe mom: Response from a white woman

You know what?! I have given birth to one black and two latino children, so you can't call me prejudice, but I'M PROUD TO BE WHITE!

I don't know what she said, but I'm sure it's not any worse than what you hear all the ethnic comics and sitcoms saying about white people. I'm the only white person on my street, I love black and latino culture, but America has become so consumed by appreciating diverse culture, that there is no white culture to left. You say it's ok to start groups based on our cultural background..huh..SOUNDS GOOD!

It's ok to be black or brown pride, but as soon as someone whispers something about white pride, they're ignorant?? That is hypocracy at it's finest.

Alls I'm say is, if I started a white pride group for just white woman?!? (which would be dumb, just like the other ethnic based groups) I'd be on the 11 o'clock news by tonight. I can see the headlines now...

"WHITE WOMAN BEAT UP, RUN OVER, SHOT IN THE BACK AND LAYED TO REST AT THE SEVEN ELEVEN ON GRANT STREET!" (no services will be held)

Mar. 20, 2007 at 5:34 PM I think being proud of one's cultural background is fine. I proudly told my boys about their Irish heritage on St Patrick's day. I have also talked with my older son about our french and native American heritage. It is cool to think about the various cultures that make up one's background. However, I don't get being proud of one's skin color.

Mar. 20, 2007 at 5:38 PM I understand what your saying to an extent. I am also proud to be white and that in way is to take away from the pride anyone else should have in their culture. I am a combination of many different races if you want to get technical (Native American, Irish, German, and Mexican). I do not get offended when another woman says ahe is proud to be Black or Brown or whatever else she may be.
My family is very diverse. We have Asian, Hispanic, African American, and Native American in our family, all of which are proud of their backgrounds. If someone is saying they are proud to be a certain race and they are the best race or any other words used to put down another race, then yah, get med. Hell get pissed because I will be right there pissed of with you, but don't get mad simply because someone is proud of their background, there is not enough time in life to get pissed about that.
Everyone should be proud of who they are and where they come from. It is our love for our cultures that allows us to teach eachother about all the great things our cultures have to offer!

Mar. 21, 2007 at 9:35 AM I just wanted to add to what you have said I AM PROUD TO BE BLACK I  was raised to be proud of who I am. I don't agree with racism, if you were to start a white pride group that is your choice. I would not offend me but if there were certain things done or said to hurt other people then that is when I would be offensive. I don't think other ethnic groups is dumb because you can relate to them but again it is how you run it and yes there will be some people that will say something you don't like and that happens in everyday life thats what make the world go round.

Excuse me if I sound ignorant.  I just don't understand what it means to have white pride.  Maybe you can enlighten me.  When I say I'm proud to be Black, I am saying that I am proud of what my people have overcome and what we continue to overcome.  I am saying that I am proud of the acomplishments of the Black community.  That's why people get a little offended by someone saying they have White pride.  Not to be offensive, but what do white people in this country (as a group) have to be proud of?  I can understand pride in your culture ie Italian, German, Welsh or whatever, but proud to be white?  I don't get it.

You dont think we can have pride in our communites ? Think about it , WE ALL came to this country from other places. Only ppl who didnt where the Indians !!! Sure some cultures have had to work more then others. But to say that we cant have pride in being white is pretty well , Racist if you ask me. I

The reason I am here is because white people came brought me here from my country.  I understand having pride in being from that specific country.  What I don't understand is saying that I am proud to be a white American.  I don't think I'm being racist.  I am saying that I honestly do not understand it and am asking that someone explain it to me.  Being racist is not even attempting to understand.  What exactly have white people in America had to overcome?  I'm not talking about specific cultures like Irish or Italian.  I mean, white people as a whole.

When I say that I am proud to be white it is because I am. If you read my previous comment you will see that I am actually a lot of different races. If I said I was proud to be Mexican, Native American, or any of the other cuktures I have running through my veins, there would be no problem. However, because I say I'm proud to be white,it is confusing.
Hopefully this will help. I am not speaking for amyone else but personally I say that because I have been through alot in my life and yes because I'm white. You always hear about the racism against black people or mexican people, and given history and our country's past, that is understadable. But why is it that when a little white girl is too scared to walk to the store by herself it's no big deal. My baby brother was thrown into a garbage can when he was in first grade because he was a "white boy".
No one bothered to ask what I was, as if it should matter, they only saw my light ass skin color and forbid their kids from playing with me.
I got everything from we can't play with you because white kids have head lice to my mom said you hate black/chinese/mexican people. We were the outcasts of our neighborhood and I learned alot about people from those experiences.
BTW, I know not all people are like those that treated me and my siblings that way. MY best friend from my childhood was a girl named Chaka. Oh and yeah, she's black.
So when I say I'm proud to be white, it is because I have learned alot about people because of the fact that I have "white" skin. I am who I am today partially because of those experiences, and I would not change that for a thing.

Guess cause of the color of my skin ............ Yeah you get my point. Im white , im damn proud of it and you know what, if anyone cant "understand" how we can have white pride and not in whites need to take over the world kinda pride , well to bad for them. I feel sorry for ppl like that.

Mar. 21, 2007 at 5:19 PM Aamy, I didn't say you or anyone else white had nothing to be proud of.  Maybe instead of getting so defensive, you could just answer the question like hotmommaof3 did.  Her post actually made sense.  Whereas your comment was just too full of emotion to be logical.  If someone doesn't understand something, instead of feeling sorry for them you might want to try to make them understand.

Mar. 21, 2007 at 6:19 PM  When i was a kid my dad was in the AF , so we had all kinds of cultures mixed togther. I cant tell you how many African American friends , mexian, russian, ...the list could go on. But we all got along great. Ok fast foward a few years , we move to NY. Not many different cultures there, kinda shocked me, then i move to GA. WOW is all i can say. All the different races stuck togther, Me not being used to that tried to get friendly with some girls i had in my classes. Basicly they laughed in my face and called me all sort of names. Basicly i couldnt be freinds with them cause i was white and they let me know it. You want examples on how us "white" ppl have stuff to be proud of , go look at a history book. There is plenty of the good along with the bad in those books.
