With all this talk about saving the earth and "going green" I will tell you the truth.  Americans will NEVER truly go green.  Why you ask?  Convenience.

Why don't most mothers use clothe diapers?  Because it's more convenient to throw the yucky diaper away than to gather them up, scrap out the poop and wash them.  Yes, there are some diapers that have the convenience of a flush-able insert (G-Diapers), but where are they?  Not in any stores near me, so I don't buy them.  Instead I buy the horrible plasticity diapers that will never break down in the garbage dumps.

Why do we drink bottled water instead of tap?  Cause it's convenient to pull out a bottle of water to drink instead of putting water through a filter, putting filtered water in the fridge, pull out a glass, pour the water in the glass etc...plus you have the convenient little packages that dissolve in the bottle of water when you cap it and shake it up.  If you do that with a glass you'd have to take out a spoon to stir it up!  More inconvenience for me.

You getting my point?  Some Americans will buy stuff that says that it's good for the environment or says it's all natural to feel good about themselves, thinking they are doing good, when in fact, they aren't because they just bagged that enviromentally safe or all natural product in a plastic bag.  We refuse to sacrifice for our convenience.

So what do we do now?

I'm guilty of using disposable diapers, but they are chlorine free and made out of recycled products. We filter our water and put it in metal bottles that we can wash and reuse. I made my own canvas grocery bags to use at the store. I use recycled toilet paper and paper towels. 99% of my food is organic. Oh, and I recycle.

It does take more time, but I feel good about what I do. I just wish more people would.
