Does anyone else feel like every change in their scedule or moment they take for themselves "costs" them something?
I had a terrible evening last night, okay not a whole evening, but an hour of it was pure chaos. I was going along, making dinner at 5, like I usually do. The house was clean, I had just played/exercised with the kids, the kids were listening to music and playing, everything was looking good. It starts with the baby (well she's almost 2, but we still call her the baby) she casually walks over to the table, gets my son's cup (which has no lid, which is unusual) and joyfully throws the cup into the air. Somehow all the milk doesn't splatter on the floor, the dog quickly runs to my rescue and starts licking the milk from the floor. As I'm gathering paper towels to mop up the portion of milk that spilled on to the carpet, the baby picks up the cup and, with a bland look on her face, pours the remainder of the milk down the dogs back. Meanwhile my nuts are burning in the oven.
I rescue the nuts (I was toasting them for banana walnut pancakes we were having for dinner), turn down my sausage that was also threatening to burn and start looking for a towel that is slightly less than clean to wet and wash the milk off the dog. Couldn't have been a minute before my eldest daughter yells, "the dog threw-up!" and I look around the corner just in time to see the baby try to grab a huge handful of regurgitated dog food! DOUBLE EWW!!! I run the baby into the kitchen, the pan I took out of the oven was in the way so I pick it up, it is still blazing hot so I drop it with a yelp!, I can't wash her hands there now so I rush into the bathroom. I am really on the edge of my patience by this point, I pick her up, wash her hands twice with antibacterial soap, and set her on the couch. I put the dog out, and set about cleaning up the floor. I get the big stuff up with paper towels, then get out the steam cleaner, (my steam cleaner actually heats the water btw, if you are in the market for one let me know, I'll tell you what brand I have) and after thoroughly cleaning the carpet, the area rug, and the spot on the couch the baby managed to touch before I caught her with the upholstery attachment. I cleaned out the steam cleaner and brush, then let them sit in some bleach water. I swept up the kitchen, took out the trash, and set the rug in the kitchen to wash, then set about finishing dinner.
My hand hurts, I feel like an idiot because I was sobbing the entire time I was cleaning up after the disaster, and I'm mechanically cooking pancakes with sausage and eggs when my husband comes in the door at 6. I can't even speak to him. I give him the brief explanation as to why the carpet is wet and go about finishing dinner and setting the table. After dinner, I ask dh to get the kids in the tub because I need some kid free time. He does, and I clean the kitchen. I don't like cleaning, but it was actually kind of nice to look around and know that you couldn't tell what had happened there just a couple-of hours ago except that the carpet was damp in front of the TV and the steam cleaner parts were drying on the counter.
After the kids get out of the bath, I turn out the lights and put on a movie, I'm trying to rock the baby to sleep, I knew she was tired because she hadn't slept but five minutes that day. Fall asleep she did, and so did I. So I went to bed at 10, way early for me. But then I was up at 4am, because the baby woke up with a cough. But now at 6am she has fallen back to sleep on the couch, and I decided to make coffee at 5 so I wouldn't be such a tired grumpy ass. Now my ds is waking up, he's been battling a nasty sounding cough... a day in the life right?
I know this is long, thanks for listening!
