Hey, ladies.  I just wanted to let you know that while I was talking to my mom last night, she told me about a scam that had been brought to her attention because a few people had almost gotten caught up in it.  It can be VERY VERY convincing!

You will get a call, saying that it's someone from one of your credit card company's fraud departments.  They will say that they believe there have been fraudulent charges made to your account- they'll even go through an entire list of "charges" made to your account.  Everything will seem like it really IS your credit company fraud department until the VERY end of the phone call.  At the end, they will ask for your Security Number (the three digit number on the back of your card).

NO CREDIT COMPANY WILL EVER ASK YOU FOR THIS!  THEY ALREADY HAVE IT ON FILE!!!

So don't give up your Security number, no matter how real the call may seem!  Once they get that number, they can actually START making fraudulent charges to your account!  BE SAFE!

Ugh thanks, how can we ever keep up with all the scams?? If these criminals took 1/2 there brain power for good we would probably have a cure for cancer by now. Sigh.

Oh and I am assuming your mom did not give her numbers?

Apr. 30, 2008 at 1:42 PM No, she didn't, jspy72.  My mom's an accountant, so she's pretty good about this kind of stuff. :)

yep, its definitely good for people to know about these scams.

In general its good to never give any kind of information over the phone if someone has called you.  If you question the validity, call them back.. but NOT at a number they give you, if its a credit card, for example, call them back at the # on the back of your card.
