...And so it would seem that I wear more baby excriment than gets deposited into all those fluffy diapers I've been sewing. Then there was the incident where Maddy pooped in my hand and almost on Doug's head. Twice now Maddy has removed her diaper and peed on the couch (this is only one of many reasons I have a pleather couch) once she even farted a little. Oh and not just once but twice now Maddy has peed my pants.
So I started to wonder if maybe I could convice her to go in the potty. I see all these moms talk about EC (elimination communication) and finally realized there is a name for how Evie potty trained herself before she was a year old. I thought she was unique but apparently these kids today are smarter than we give them credit for. All over the US babies are using the toilet at an early age. The only problem is that in all my research on the subject I can't find an age to begin the EC process.
To clarify elimination communication is not the same as potty training thou it may give an advantage when it is time to learn to sit on the throne. EC involves learning to recognize clues that your child needs to use the toilet and then getting them on it to allow the urine or feces to enter the sewer system. It saves on diaper washing and allows for respect of your child, as they aren't sitting around in their own crap until the diaper reaches it's fill limit or you change it.
So in the name of better parenting I am going to give it a go. Already we've had a sucess! Maddy woke up after a whole fifteen minutes of sleep and I took her to the potty because she farted. Off came the diaper and I awkwardly balanced her over the toilet and rubbed her belly and "PPPPbbbffffttt" She pooped in the big girl potty! I was so proud. Then she even peed, all over the seat-just like big brother does.
Comments:
My midwife talked to us and gave tons of paper info on this topic. The studies found that a child can start from birth!! you don't ever have to use a diaper. reconizing your childs "potty" gestures this young in age reaaly does help with toilet training.
We actually use this method for toilet training. Tylor started at 18 months and was done for good by 2 years. Connor started at 20 months, and is 90% there. It's messy but hey, if it gets the job done? I hate changing a 2 year olds diaper, it feels like the he is too old!!
Good job MAMA :)
