This was so easy and really fun! The kids like ANYTHING that is a "science experiment" and this was to show Capillary Action in Flowers. Plus, I just love that they're learning "process." We do experiments the same way each time. We make a Hypothesis. We record our times...stuff like that.
So! We started with white carnations and added food color to the water to watch them pull water and show off their colors! It only took an hour before we saw color in the petals. Important: we did not skimp on food color. I didn't want there to be any doubt on color so we really squirted it in there. smile.
We started at 3:23pm and this color is the next morning. We had one flower that bent over, but that was good too b/c you could see where the colored water was pulled and then couldn't go any further.

They could really see that water is pulled to the tips of the petals. You can also see the color in all the knots and leaves!

I split one stem and we could see the color first pulled up the sides and then pulled up the middle.
