Why do so many adults INSIST on clothing for kids?

I mean, I dress my kids and the moment we step thru the door at home off the clothing goes! Seriously... often I have a HARD TIME finding my sons shoes, much less getting him to WEAR them!

Out in public though -- I honestly do try to dress my child. Even as an infant he would at least have on a onsie (and diaper of course), but I am not offended by parents whom dress their kids in JUST a diaper unless the child is obviously cold. (Infants do not regulate their body heat very well before a few weeks of age.) But other people are totally agast by it?! Honestly - as all as the "important" parts are covered -- what's the problem? T-shirts and diapers cover essentials on girls, and a diaper covers the essentials on boys.

Shoes?! Yeah.. that's a whole different fight -- again as long as the parent is doing the best to make sure that the child does not step on anything that can slice, dice, rip or burn -- why bother with them? And my son can walk on stuff that makes my skin crawl watching him and is fine! They have less weight to throw around so I guess it simply does not bother them as much. (But if the yard is not mowed/cleaned he's gotta have them on to go out -- providing again if I can find them...)

What's your take? They are just kids -- and its RARE to see a kindergartener NEKKID! They can be trained - and most times its really younger than preschool that we see kids with little to no clothing in hot weather conditions. Winter -- well, that again.. another ball of wax..

May. 6, 2008 at 12:13 PM I agree with you. It shouldn't matter so much that they're covered from head to toe. Infants and toddlers should be allowed to run around with  nothing on if that's what makes them comfortable. Generally it's for a reason that kids take their clothing off, if it's too hot, itchy, whatever. As long as the essentials are covered out in public. I don't know many people that would complain too much if I brought my son out to the store without a shirt, or pants, so long as he's got a hat on and something to keep him from getting sunburned. Winter is of course, a whole other story, indoors as long as it's warm it could, I suppose, be allowed, but it would make it harder to put clothing on them when it's time to go out. They don't generally make the connection between clothes= warm until they're older.
