Jacob’s Salvation Story - written by Robert Correll (my husband and Jacob's Daddy)
Jacob was saved today sometime around 1 in the afternoon. He is just over 4-years old.
Jacob suffered from a lot of attacks yesterday. We went to the Awana graduation ceremony at Pine Hills church and when it came time for him to go up on stage with the Cubbies he was overwhelmed with fear and couldn’t go up. I fought for him but he wouldn’t budge. That night, Jacob woke up crying and afraid. It was like he had a bad dream but couldn’t remember it, and he wasn’t feeling well besides. I went up and prayed over him, then had him sit in my lap as I prayed. This prayer didn’t seem to have much impact on him.
It was while I was praying that I had a sudden flash of inspiration from God. God told me that Jacob didn’t have him in his heart. It was that simple. I seemed to understand immediately what that meant. Fighting for Jake was becoming less effective. Satan was finding more “traction” because Jake was getting older.
I talked with Anne after I came back downstairs from the bedroom about what had happened. We agreed that we would talk to Jacob about Jesus soon. It was over the course of the night and into the next morning that we both became convicted that we should not wait. He was ready. God wouldn’t have told me so if I was supposed to do nothing about it.
Today, when the time was right, I took Jacob into the laundry room and sat him on the washer. I have to say I was a little afraid, but in essence, I knew what was going to happen. He believed. I knew that.
We talked about Jesus, and I said that as we grow up Jesus wants us to choose him over Satan. Jesus wants to come into our hearts and bring us into his family. We have to choose. It doesn’t just happen. I mentioned that when you have Jesus in your heart, it helps you fight Satan and that Jesus will never leave you. He loves you and he will protect you. This was the reason Jesus died for us. I talked about Jesus being our savior.
Ben poked his head in and I asked him to describe what happened when he invited Jesus into his heart and how it made him feel. He said Jesus was in his heart and that he was going to heaven when he died. Ben also said it made him feel really good.
After making sure Jake knew and understood these things, I asked him if he was ready and wanted to ask Jesus to come into his heart. He said yes. So I asked him to pray with me, and I led him in a prayer to accept Jesus as his savior and ask him into his heart.
We went out of the laundry room and shared the news with everyone. Jake also called Grandma at work and told her. Anne went to the store for balloons and ice cream cone cupcake mix, and bought the same books we gave Ben when we was saved. We celebrated after dinner.
Background:Our family life has a lot to do with Jesus and God, but Cubbies really helped us out. Jake finished his first year of Cubbies this week, which involves memorizing scripture and having fun at church with others that are his age. Ben went through his first year last year (2006-7) and was in Sparkies this year. Comparably, Jake was a lot younger for his first year of Cubbies, and is only now just over 4, whereas Ben was just over 4 when he started Cubbies. They were both saved at roughly the same age; to within a few months. Jake has done exceptionally well in Cubbies, and has a fantastic memory for scripture. We’re very proud of him. Getting together every week and talking about Jesus helped Jacob come to this point and understand what happened today without me having to explain everything from the beginning.
