I didn't want to take over the other journal, so I thought I'd start my own. Now for me personally, I think Revelations is a "different" kind of book in the bible. I definitely think that some of what's said could be applicable to today. However, there is no doubt in my mind that some of the things written by John, the author of the book, were meant to be for his day only. The first clue to this is 666. In Hebrew (which was the language most commonly used by Christians at the time) letters had numerical references, and 666 can be translated to Nero. For those who don't know, Nero was the Roman emperor who sent John (the author of Revelations) to Patmos (a small island off the coast of Turkey). Nero hated Christians (at the time the Christians were only a small group of people who had branched off from Judaism). He had killed and tortured many Christians.
Now, another clue that this book may have partially been meant for John's time instead of ours is the beast. The beast in Revelations has a fatal head wound, but lives on. (He should be dead, but is alive.) Nero committed suicide, but at the time it was widely believed by Christians that he was still alive. See the similarities between Nero and the beast?
Also, there is the harlot that wear's purple and sits among 7 mountains. Oddly enough, Rome is surrounded by 7 mountains, and at the time the official color of the Romans was purple. I know that some think this is the Catholic church, however considering the time the book was written I think it's much more obvious that John is referring to the current Roman empire, and Rome itself.
Last, it was believed by John (and preached by him as well as others) that their time was actually the end of times, and they truly believed that Christ's second coming was soon.
Just an interesting side note - did you know that Revelations was chosen as the final book of the New Testament because the Council of Carthage felt it was a good ending, as it was a good story.
