My status mentioned her, so I thought I would put the whole story in a journal post so those who want to know what happened can read it here!
My 17 month old neice had a seizure about 4:30 Thursday afternoon, and she was taken by ambulance to their local hospital (Lewisville, TX). She had another seizure in the ER and was transferred to a regional children's hospital (in Plano) about 8:30 that night. She was dx'd with a UTI and her white blood cell count was high, but the CT scan and other tests were normal.
This was the 2am (Fri morning) update from my brother:
No incidents since the second seizure. I am going to head over there in the morning, but it looks like we are out of the woods for now. The Drs. say they only worry about seizures that last of 5 minutes or don't appear that the child is able to come out of. Kayleighs 2 were approximately 1.5-2 minutes each and she came out of them on her own. She has a Unrinary Tract Infection and they think that might be contributing so she is on an antibiotic drip.
and this was the 8:30 Friday morning update:
Kayleigh had another seizure at 7:10am. This one was a little bit longer and more severe. The nurses came in. She is now resting comfortably. We haven't seen a Dr since 9pm yesterday. They will assign us a neurologist and probably do an EEG on her today. The Doctor is making rounds so we will see her at some point. They drew blood at 6:30am. We last saw the pediatrician at 9:30ish pm.
From 11:15 Friday night:
Just dropped Kayleigh and her mom off at her mom's house. Kayleigh had an EEG this afternoon (imagine trying to tape 30 some electrodes to a very cranky 17 month old). The neurologist looked at her EEG and saw nothing out of the ordinary and no evidence of seizure or related activity. He decided that he didn't want to pursue meds or an MRI at this time. If Kayleigh has another seizure then we will look into meds and an MRI. For now everything is pretty much normal. Kayleigh was her usual self the entire day today after her morning nap after the seizure she had this morning. It's not unusual for kids to have bouts with seizure and it just goes away.
From 9:30 Saturday morning:
She slept through the night, got up for Breakfast and is back asleep again. She didn't get much sleep Thursday night and her naps yesterday kept getting interrupted with nurse visits. I suspect by Monday or Tuesday she'll be 100% back on schedule.
Brian also told me the urine test they did this morning came back clear, so the UTI has cleared up.
So, that was all a little scary for my family. have heard from several people that it is not all that uncommon and the children usually outgorw it my age 3 or 4. Here's hoping my brother doesn't have to go through a scare like that again any time soon!
