Flu is going around at an alarming rate at the schools where my kids attend. The four of them are spread out between three different schools in our district and in each school there have been a number of kids out with diagnosed flu and with flu-like syptoms. This has been going on most of the school year thus far. Since this is unusual for this time of year in our warm-weather area, I have taken a few percautions to keep my kids' immune system strong so that they stay well, or at least are able to stave off the worst effects of illness when it comes their way. ...

All day I have been thinking it is Friday. Maybe it is just wishful thinking. Or perhaps it is because this week has seemed extra long. Whatever the reason, I am ready for this week to be over. I want a do-over week in the worst possible way.
Amidst the chaos of this week, with a sick kid, volunteer duties and helping my husband prepare for a business trip - all while in the throws of a hormonal whirlwind, I might add - the last thing I need is people coming to my page and my journals and leaving rude comments. Seriously, do people not have any tact...

I just got back from dropping my fourth child off at the third school of the morning. I have just one word for the experience at all three schools - ARGH! Okay, that is really not a word, but I am just speechless at the shear number of people who think that traffic signs are not meant to be followed - at least by them. Because for some reason they find themselves above the law in these incidences. That is right, people! It is against the law to disobey traffic signs!
That sign in bright red letters that says - NO PARKING, STANDING OR STOPPING and the hours listed...

Punctuation. What's its function? It seems as though a number of people have lost sight of the function of punctuation. It is often overused, underused and worst of all, just plain unused a lot in Internet writing. This makes reading some posts really tricky. Punctuation has a real purpose in writing and should never be left out, even in casual writing. At the very least a period at the end of the sentence is required. I can live without a comma, semi-colon and a colon, but I just can't live without a period.
If you don't used periods then...

That is the question. What will you experience when you head out to the State Fair of Texas (SFT)? Once upon a time people went to the SFT, looked at prize winning animals, took in a couple of shows, rode a few rides and perhaps grabbed a Fletcher's Corny Dog or a candied apple along the way. Gone are the old days, y'all, now when you stroll along the rows at the SFT, every food booth offers something different in the way of admittedly delicious, but oh so bad for you, probably deep fried, something-or-other. I don't think people...

I was discussing religion with a friend yesterday and was very intrigued with her story about her journey of faith. I find it very interesting how different people come to religion at different times in their life and how we view the world based on our religion and also how people view us based on our path of faith.
Many people, myself included, were sort of born into the religion they ultimately choose for their life. This doesn't mean we never question the tenants of the religion and perhaps even grow to reject some of the teachings of the church at large, while still...

Yes, everyone needs to let off steam now and then and I for one think that Cafemom journals is one of the best places to let off said steam. No one will judge me, right? Seriously, you all aren't going to bash me are you? Oh, well, that is the risk I take when I go off on a rant, yes? Not everyone is going to a) agree with me or b) give a flying fig about my rant. So, it is in the spirit of all that is Cafemom-ish that I write this rant. *jumps off the high-dive*
People who brag about their lives are annoying. No one wants to know every small...

I have come to discover a thing or two about volunteering that I think would be beneficial for everyone to know.
This first section is addressed to those who are using volunteers to augment their staff.
Volunteers are not employees. What they are doing for you is a free service. You cannot treat them like paid staff members.
If it weren't for the volunteer taking time out of his/her day to stop in and help you, you would either have to do the work yourself of pay someone else to do it. Not only is that volunteer working for you for free, he/she is actually...

I have been thinking a great deal about volunteerism and the use of our personal gifts lately. I volunteer quite a bit and often wrestle with whether or not to take on a volunteer opportunity. When I first started volunteering on a regular basis, I would pretty much say yes to everything and then I would find myself burned out and resentful rather quickly. Over the years I have learned that it simply makes for a smoother ride for all involved if I limit myself to jobs that I am really good at. It just makes so much more sense. I also never realized that in my eagerness to jump in with...

Birthdays are a good time for reflection; for taking stock in the year that has passed and looking forward into the year that is to come. And so it is today, that I think about my life over the past year. It is remarkable how many things have happened. I thank my God for every passing year as I try to move closer to the woman he has designed me to be. That is a work in progress and one that will never really be complete, but I can only move forward in hopes that as I look to him for guidance I am able to be led in the direction that my God has planned for me.
Last...
