Aha! Mom:1, Kid:0

Comments (1)
The other day I made chili, something my 2-year-old swears he hates. I know that he'll eat when he's hungry. I wouldn't want to be forced to eat something I don't like and I won't do it to him. I also won't become a short-order chef. No big deal. He had a peanut butter sandwich because that's what else we were serving (my husband likes to dip a sandwich in chili, I think that's gross but whatever). So later, before I had a chance to put the leftovers away, he pulls up a chair to the counter, points to the bowl of chili, and says "can I have a bite?""Um. Okaaaay..."He stood at the counter and...

When your child loses a beloved toy

Comments (4)
What do you do? My son never got into the lovey thing, so there's no tatty old blanket I have to keep an eye on, but every day for the last few weeks he has been asking for his green helicopter. It's a Matchbox one, just like the one below, only white and green:  I haven't seen it in a few months, but never noticed until he said something. The kid has so many cars/planes/helicopters/firetrucks/etc. I couldn't keep track of them all. We have looked everywhere, even emptied his toybox, car box, and other boxes completely, lifted up couches, looked behind things, and can't find it...

Halloween costumes this year

We had a Halloween party to go to on Friday, and had been lost as to what to wear.My husband told me Friday morning, "it's very important that I be a banana tonight."He had this:http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/bananaand this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_1rSm2MDM4in mind.I stopped at JoAnn's and picked up 2½ yards of fleece, and two hours later:This used an entire bag of stuffing.I made the top a hood instead of a continuous shape so my husband could pull it down, since he's a sweaty guy and I didn't want him roasting all night in a thick layer of fleece and fluffand then sleeping...

This is becoming a theme

DH has a paper due today, and he's been "working" on it for ages. By "working," I mean he does a little work, whines about it on Facebook, and then takes a break. So last night he stayed up until about 1 and got it finished. I had gone to bed around 9:30, since I had kids coming at 5:45 this morning. He comes up and turns the lamp on, asks if my alarm is set, and then tells me to go back to sleep. I blink at the brightness and say, "yeah right." He says, "I can't fall asleep unless I read a little first."Pause."Fine, I'll go read somewhere else."Pause. I'm waiting. He then climbs into bed and...

Fair Trade coffee to benefit a friend's adoption

My church's pastor and his family are in the process of adopting two beautiful children, a brother and sister, from Ghana. Here is part of an e-mail I received from the pastor's wife: We began this process knowing that finances would be an issue, but we also believed that God would provide what we need when we need it. We have quite a bit to come up with still, and buying coffee from this company will provide us with $5 per bag and a small amount as well for the t-shirts and other items. Please do not feel any obligation to buy anything, but we would be thrilled if you did! This...

My 2-year-old's pumpkins

Comments (7)
I was frantically trying to finish a swap package (I'm already sending late) and my son decided he neeeeded to decorate his baby pumpkins, which have been been sitting around for weeks. I thought about gluing wiggle eyes to them (that's my solution for everything) but I found something else in the drawer with the wiggle eyes, and K was hooked. In fact, he needed to use all six in the package. They're stuffed animal eyes!He showed me where each eye should go and I shoved them in.He told me what kind of mouth he wanted it to have and I cut it from scraps of fabric and paper.I intended to...

I confiscated my son's imaginary cell phone.

Comments (4)
It's true. He was throwing wood chips at the park, and I told him he needed to sit on the low wooden wall that surrounds the playground. He sat down, then hopped up and ran along the wall about 20 feet and yelled, "I'm getting my phone!" He picked it up ("it" being nothing) and ran back to his spot and sat down. Then he answered his phone (which doesn't exist). "Hello? Hello!"I marched over to him and held out my hand. "Give Mommy the phone."He said no and threw it. I told him he could have his phone back when he was done with his time-out. Then I walked over to where I imagined a cell...

I don't know WHERE he gets it.

When my son very politely asked for a banana, I was happy to oblige. His adorable face and sweet voice, coupled with the "please may I?" made my heart warm. I peeled the banana partway and handed it to him, but he immediately handed it back."I don't like the butt hole.""WHAT?!""I don't like the banana's butt hole."I didn't want to make too big a deal out of it (knowing that if I gave it too much attention, he would say it more), so I calmly bit the end off the banana, gave it back, and suppressed my laughter as I looked over at my dear husband to inquire as to where our son got his ideas...

Please help, my 2yo needs a haircut!

My husband and I decided way back that we would let our kids have their hair however they wanted. Or try, anyway. I think it's important to my husband because he wanted a mohawk when he was little and never got it; now he's bald. We were talking about when our kids are older, but our 2½-year-old, Kalten, has an opinion NOW. We used to just buzz his hair with  a #4 attachment, and he was happy with that. But lately he's told us he wants it longer. I said, "long like Mommy's?" and he said "no, like Kalten!" So he likes his longer hair. We've had the bangs and back trimmed, but that just...
