I moved to Portland in the summer of 1998, six weeks after finishing my master’s degree in Art History from the University of Oregon and after landing my first full time job with benefits at the Portland Art Museum. I found an apartment on the third floor of a 100-year-old Victorian in one of Portland’s tony historic neighborhoods. If you have never been to Portland, or have never lived there, it was like landing in the middle of paradise.

10. Eat my favorite sushi rolls at a Japanese restaurant. 9. Accidentally get a cup of coffee at a lesbian coffee shop. 8. Measure the humidity at 100%. 7. Go to four different stores in one day that carry only yarn or books about yarn. 6. Climb aboard the ship that was the Inteceptor from Pirates of the Carribbean. 5. Go for a run on the beach. 4. Sit in a lush, overgrown garden and eat brie and pepper jelly on sesame crackers.

I seriously did that today. I finished my first ever Sprint Triathlon!!! Whooopeee!!! I did it in under two hours. 1:54 was my time. And the cool part was that my nephew did it too. He doesn't get a lot of chances to do something that takes this much work so we all encouraged him and he did great. His time was 2:25. Daniel had the little kids and they walked and rode around in the car and took pictures and encouraged us. I felt like I had a decent swim, which could have been better with a little more training. I kind of slacked off...

So, there's this pretty amazing lady who I'll just call ROFLMAO who TAGGED ME and now I must come up with ten, random, goofy, or nutty things about myself. Since I like lists and I sure do like ROFLMAO, here goes:1. Today I wore a shirt my brother in law gave me that is brown and has a yellow screenprint of a Native American Indian wearing a gas mask toting a briefcase. The shirt says Modern Day Warriors and Native American Rights Fund. My brother in law rocks.2. In about 53 hours I'm going to torture myself by swimming 500 meters, then jumping...

Forget the question "What's the ideal way to spend Mother's Day?"There's ideal, and then there's reality, in a house with a teenager, a 2yo, and a teething baby. The way I spent Mother's Day today was a combination of being with my family and doing something for myself. I woke up this morning, checked on the baby, and as soon as Chloe saw me, she wanted to nurse. Happy to oblige. This is my special cuddle time with her, all warm from sleeping. She's old enough to smile and interact and kick her feet excitedly when the...

I love to bake, because I love to eat what I make. I've gotten into the habit of including Andrew in almost everything I make and he's very good at holding and pouring measuring cups. Last weekend my niece was visiting, she's also 2 like my son and a great eater. They finished up the last loaf of bread so I had them make another. They practiced taking turns pouring the various ingredients into the bread pan (of the machine). It was sooo cute. I think they had fun and I really enjoyed having them help. My husband took...

1. The Brothers of Gwynedd Quartet by Edith Pargeter. Four novels in one about the last years of the Welsh kingdom in Britain written by the author of the Brother Cadfael mysteries. So the whole teenage pregnancy thing got thrown into stark relief for me this prom season. Our school, and many schools in our remote valley, have a teenage pregnancy problem. The year before my husband graduated, seven girls got pregnant. This year at my school, a sixteen year old and a thirteen year old eighth-grader just had babies. Yep. Another girl is pregnant and probably a couple more got pregnant on Saturday, despite all that the parents and administration did to prevent it. The sixteen year old walked around school with a...

So I've been at this tri training for a little while now and for the most part I like it. Remember the facts, ladies: I've been sedentary for a long while now, especially through pregnancy #2. I was about rock bottom with regard to my fitness level when I started. I started training just to see if I could do it, and I had all the confidence in the world. The triathlon I'm training for is a sprint distance: 500 meter swim, 13 mile bike ride and 3.2 mile run. Some really great things are happening to my body. Part of the training is...
