The cookbook theme today, because science is everywhere.

Do you own cookbooks?  Do you ever use them?  Interesting theme for today because I have been working on MY personal cookbook.  I have been transferring all my recipes from the bits and pieces in my 'cookbook drawer' to a Word document with pretty pictures and cute font.  This is step one in changing these to metric, as my household works through two transformations in 2010: metrication and conversion to mostly-natural. I still have alot of typing to do in my cookbook.  It's going to be fabulous when I get it done!   Tonya The Science Spot

I can hear you whisper..... from 50 feet away.

Is this possible?  Can you hear a whisper from 50 feet away?  Could you, if you had super ears like a cat, or maybe some fancy microphone equipment?  What if you had a parabolic reflector, used as a listening vessel? Until this past weekend, I had never heard the term parabolic reflector, and I probably would not have been able to identify it as an object that can be used as a listening vessel.  A parabolic reflector is shaped like a bowl (concave dish) so that it reflects waves into a common focal point.  This dish can be used to...

Happy Birthday The Science Spot!!

Comments (8)
I am not one that enjoys birthdays.  My real birthday is a few days into the new year, which does not lend itself well to being remembered,  Growing up, I was often forgotten, or people didn't feel like anymore parties come the first week of January.  I particularly hated it when people would give me a gift at Christmas and tell me it was for my birthday too, even though I got the same thing as my sister (who was not having a birthday).  One year my mom completely forgot my birthday and I "got" to select my own birthday present from Ames that day. Even as...

The Science of Bread Baking

Comments (4)
November 17th is Homemade Bread Day!  Many types of breads have been made in the home for thousands of years.  Among my favorite is the white yeast bread; it has such a different taste when you make your own!  Bread making is not the easiest thing I have done - there is alot of art mixed into the science of breadmaking. Fresh bread generally consists of few ingredients - flour, water, yeast, sugar, salt, eggs, milk and oil.  Here is the basic white bread recipe I started with.  If you look around the internet or Cafemom's Homemade Bread Making group, you will...

Natural Conversion

Comments (4)
I have made the great commitment to convert my family to all natural products.  This conversion is something I expect to take over a year, as I slowly change my habits and product selections as I run out of my current inventory of health, beauty and cleaning supplies.  I mention this here, because through this time I will be learning alot about chemicals and natural products. as well as how these things affect the body, and I expect I will write about them occasionally.  So far I have done some really general reading (in the Green Natural Organic Simple Living...

A science group with a makeover.

Comments (2)
I took last week off from posting blog posts so I could work in one of the science groups.  Stem Cells has been re-organized, updated, clarified and simplified.  It looks great.  There are new images/diagrams and better explanations.  Even though the drama of Obama's new guidelines has died off, the field of stem cell research is buzzing with new therapies becoming reality and constant basic research in stem cell biology. No membership required.  I want you to be able to look through the information without having your name attached to it...

Collect your own sleep data

Comments (4)
Study your sleep from the comfort of your bed.  The Zeo.  Has anyone seen this thing?  You wear a headband to bed and it measures your sleep by monitoring your electrical brain signals.  The bedside computer lets you analyze your sleeping and suggests ways to make it better.  LOL!!  I don't need to spend $249 on this thing to tell me having kids and a dog is disruptive to my sleep. I think it would be cool to play with it a few nights.  I definately think a kid interested in the brain or electrophysiology would love this piece incorporated into their...

Where Insulin Comes From

Comments (4)
November 14th is World Diabetes Day.  Many organizations use this day to educate the public on Diabetes awareness, the importance of healthy eating and risk of children and adults becoming diabetic.  I would like to use today to generate awareness of where therapeutic insulin comes from and how it is made. Many years ago, insulin for patient injections was harvested and purified from human cadavers immediately after death.  This could then be stored for a short time before being used by the patient to control the blood sugar.  There were major concerns with this...

Today's theme - LOST item missed dearly.

Comments (6)
What item have you lost, and never been able to find, and you miss the most? My diploma.  Seriously.  I never found it.  Many of you helped me look for it: http://www.cafemom.com/journals/read/1518517/_HELP_If_you_were_a_hidden_diploma_where_would_you_be?next=11 Any new ideas??  Should I just cave in and go buy a replacement from school?   Tonya The Science Spot

Military Science

Comments (1)
In observation of Veteran's Day, let's take a quick break to read about how national defense and our military connect with science. The field of Military Science uses scienctific research and other military information to maintain and improve our military capability.  You can read more about this on Wikipedia, St. Norbert's College (Military Science program), University at Washington (Military Science program), or a host of other interesting links.  Tonya The Science Spot
