Description:
I just adopted her last week, and was told that she was over ten, but had no idea that she would be this inactive. She literally lays on the floor all day unless she is eating or outside pooping.

My dog is old and moves slowly...should I ask the vet what is wrong? or assume its arthritus and there's nothing I can do?

can't hurt to ask, but it's likely just old age.

You can treat arthritis in animals just like ya do in people -- so yeah, get him to the vet & get some meds.

From working at a vet. previously, there are MANY options to help the dog. If you have the time, a warm bath that the dog can soak in a few times a week does wonders! (It also helps with movement) Our older dog loves sitting in front of a portable heater with a blanket. Also a small heating pad placed where the dog sleeps under a blanket so it doesn't burn and never to high.

When my dog was 14 she still acted like a puppy at times. Yes, she loved her naps but she was still very active up until the day she died. That was very nice of you to take in an older dog my heart goes out to you and all the other animal lovers.
