It was a little different with my 1st than with my next two. We had no schedule with my first. He was all over the map and we just went with the flow. He finally settled into somewhat of a schedule, but would ONLY follow it at home *sigh*... AND it consisted of him being up 5-6 times a night until 11 months. Ugh. lol

With my next two were weren't on much of a schedule for the first 6 weeks or so, but then my oldest was in preschool and Speech Therapy and we had schedules to keep and the younger two kind of realized it and folded right in very easily :-)

I had my dd while my dh was overseas. And I met her needs but I had to put her on a schedule so that I could maintain some sanity.. Its difficult at first but eventually I managed to do it..

We had a routine from day one, but the schedule was always there to serve us, not the other way around. If my DS got hungry earlier, I fed him of course but I'd then look at other factors to see WHY he got hungry early or had trouble taking a nap. Then I'd work to fix the root of the problem, whether it was not taking full feedings, a growth spurt, illness, or something else.

We didn't have a set schedule. Things just sort of worked out into a comfortable pattern for all of us.

I met the needs based on a loose schedule, however, I wish I would have created a more strict schedule. It does really help to work with your child on making it more strict. Helps with their felt safety.

My son eats when he's hungry and sleeps when he's tired.
