Old Whine in Old Bottles

IT'S UNLIKELY THAT I'll get to talk to Barack Obama during this presidential campaign. Since he keeps even friendlies in the media at a distance, I probably have no chance of getting an opportunity to bend his ear.

But if I could ask Barack Obama one question, it would be this: "We haven't suffered a terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11. Are President Bush's policies at least partly responsible for this? If so, which ones? If not, to what do you attribute our run of luck?"

Okay, that's more like three questions, but you get the point. I'm not confident that even the non-loony left as personified by the very sober and thoughtful Barack Obama can honestly assess the current administration. Yes, the administration has made errors in a thousand different areas. But if you surveyed the public right after 9/11 and suggested there would be no more attacks on American soil in the next seven years, the percentage agreeing to that

Sen. Barack Obama is being criticized for the choice of words he used last week during a meeting with members of the Congressional Black Caucus in which he reportedly degraded senior female allies of his one-time rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., by telling them to "get over it.”

McCain’s Health Plan Puts at Least 56 Million People with Chronic Disease at Risk of Losing Health Coverage

And the Number one best reason to vote for Obama is that his health plan doesn't look like McCains.
Hope all you McCain supporters have never been sick a day in your lives or have thousands saved for that rainy day. I sure as hell am not that lucky. Nor are my parents and my MIL. My niece would be left with no insurance and so would my son and my youngest sister.

Tran Trong Duyet - a sprightly retiree and amateur ballroom dancer - must rank as one of John McCain's more unlikely supporters.

Four decades ago, during the Vietnam war, Mr Duyet was in charge of the notorious Hoa Lo prison - the place where Mr McCain says he was brutally beaten and tortured during five-and-a-half years as an American prisoner of war.

"McCain is my friend," said 75-year-old Mr Duyet as he feeds the caged birds he now keeps in his garden in this coastal city.

"If I was American, I would vote for him."

The Bush Family's Best Buddies

Over the years, the Saudi Royal Family has put at least $1.4 billion into the hands of the Bush family and its friends.

That's "billion" with a "b."

Even in these days of inflation, that's real money.

Did Bush go to Saudi Arabia to ask for lower oil prices or to assure the Saudis they could keep sticking it to us as long as he and his family were given their cut?
Until you do, you won’t understand the media’s treatment of McCain, and the damage this love affair could do to our country if it causes us to elect another dumb, affable, incompetent, corrupt, jellyfish puppet with malevolent advisers in the shadows.

Addressing civil rights activists in Selma, Ala., a year ago, Sen. Barack Obama traced his "very existence" to the generosity of the Kennedy family, which he said paid for his Kenyan father to travel to America on a student scholarship and thus meet his Kansan mother.

The Camelot connection has become part of the mythology surrounding Obama's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. After Caroline Kennedy endorsed his candidacy in January, Newsweek commentator Jonathan Alter reported that she had been struck by the extraordinary way in which "history replays itself" and by how "two generations of two families -- separated by distance, culture and wealth -- can intersect in strange and wonderful ways."

It is a touching story -- but the key details are either untrue or grossly oversimp

The good news in northern California is that more than a thousand wildfires aren't growing. The bad news: There's no relief in sight.
No new major fires had broken out Sunday as fire crews inched closer to getting some of the largest of 1,420 blazes surrounded, according to the state Office of Emergency Services. Some 364,600 acres—or almost 570 square miles—have burned.

John McCain kind of stepped in it the other day, here in California, but luckily no one noticed. He was being driven from John Wayne airport to a fundraiser, and he took a quick call from Martin Wisckol of the Orange County Register. Wisckol asked him a series of softball questions so tedious McCain's driver had to crack the window so the breeze would keep him from passing out, but then this:

2-Year-Old Survives on Cat Food After Mom's Death

SACRAMENTO — Sacramento police say a 2-year-old boy survived on cat food for up to six days after his mother died.

A social worker heard the toddler crying while making a visit to check on the family Thursday morning. The worker called police after no one answered the door of the brick duplex where the mother and child lived.

Inside, authorities found the body of 36-year-old Lisa Gonzales. It was not immediately known how she died, but a Child Protective Services spokeswoman says the woman suffered from a chronic illness.

Sacramento police officials did not immediately respond Friday to a request for comment.

Neighbors said the woman worked as a waitress and described her as frail and quiet.

The boy, identified only as Noah, is in protective custody while social workers determine whether he can be placed with a family member.
