I remember the exact day and the exact moment that my son's umbilical cord stump fell off. I was changing his diaper and I noticed that it was no longer there! In its place was a clean little innie belly button - perfectly shaped. But where had the stump gone? I had gotten stuck to his diaper. I quickly picked it off and held it in my hands. Tears welled in my eyes as I looked down at the last little remained of the time he was a part of me. But that sadness was soon filled with excitement. I was going to be able to give him his first bath.
We had a big old-fashioned sink in our apartment so it seemed ideal to put his baby bathtub in the sink and bathe him there. We were finally able to break out the baby shampoo, the little washcloths, and even his hooded monkey towel (a favorite of mine from the day I registered for it).
Man, babies are slippery when wet! Nothing prepared me for that. I was even less prepared for his decision to poop in the water. What a mess! One water change and one clean up later, we were into washing. He splashed while I washed, and my husband snapped about a gazillion pictures. Our baby seemed to be having a great time, as so were we.
The best part was that the bath seemed to put him right to sleep. After we changed him and fed him, he could barely keep his eyes open. Score one for us!
