If there was one thing that my mom in law always stressed, it was giving my baby enough tummy time. Truth be told, I hated doing it because it seemed that my baby did not like it. He'd get red in the face and start fussing immediately. It seemed like such a struggle for him. And when talking to other moms, I realized that this was not uncommon baby behavior.
But what I realize now is that, that time spent on his tummy was invaluable. It helped him strengthen his neck muscles so that he could lift his head and turn it while in this position. It was like baby yoga! The more time I gave him on his belly, the more he liked it, and the more comfortable I got with it. We started off with just one tummy time session a day once he was a month old. We had to wait for his umbilical cord stump to fall of first. Then we moved it to twice a day. Each session was no longer than ten minutes.
In no time it was evident to see that his neck and back muscles were truly getting a work out. It was no longer a struggle for him to lift and turn his head. In fact, I'd lie on different sides of him and he'd turn his head to find my voice. It was a fun little game for both of us!
