I talked to my baby from the moment I found out I was pregnant. I read to him from my favorite magazines. I even read the business section from the Wall Street Journal in attempts to up his vocabulary. I sang my favorite songs to him, and even made some up along the way. I explained to him what I was doing at different points of the day and even told him what I was about to eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner. If anyone saw me doing this, I'm sure their first thought was that I was crazy!
All I wanted was for my baby to recognize the sound and pitch of my voice. And, it turns out that my work during pregnancy was rewarded! It seemed like he could recognize my voice above all others, even from the moment he was born! It also seemed to be very soothing for him.
He also seemed to know my husband's voice. While pregnant, my husband would put his face on my belly and tell our son to sleep well every night before bed. It was like our own little bedtime ritual, one that resulted in our son knowing his dad's voice as well. The deep boom of my hubby's voice also seemed to comfort our baby.
It's amazing how connected you can be to your child even from the first moments after birth. We did after all carry them for nine months!
